MacArthur Beach State Park – The Only State Park in Palm Beach County
Did you know that John D. MacArthur Beach State Park is the only state park in Palm Beach County? This park is located at the Northern end of the barrier island known as Singer Island. It is an “island in time”, preserving the natural heritage of the subtropical coastal habitat that once covered southeast Florida. It is nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Lake Worth Lagoon. Present and future generations will discover and experience this environmental treasure, thanks to the foresight of a land donation from John D. MacArthur and the State of Florida.
After a university study in the 1970’s revealed the biological treasures in this area, John D. MacArthur realized this was a rare and beautiful piece of Florida’s southeast coast and the park was established in 1989. Seven species of plants and 22 species of animals designated as endangered or threatened are found within the 438 acres of natural environments, such as hardwood hammocks and estuaries.
In addition to the pristine beach, which offers swimming, snorkeling and fishing, visitors will also enjoy many other amenities when they visit John D. MacArthur Beach State Park. A good place to begin your visit is at the Nature and Welcome Center. Join a daily morning walking tour from 10 to 11 led by a Park Naturalist or a Butterfly Walk on the first Saturday of the month from March to October. There is an amphitheater, gift shop, children’s playground, kayak rentals, picnic facilities, nature trails and special events, including Bluegrass Music on the second & third Sunday of each month, Summer Day Camp and Turtle Talks & Walks during June and July and, so much more!
